As the founding mission of UTMIST, academic events and projects have been incredibly important in supporting our undergraduate students in the academic/research careers. In the past, UTMIST has also produced educational videos in the MIST101/102 courses, and the Academics Department is responsible for developing new content as appropriate to keep up with new research and trends.
Welcome to UTMIST’s Machine Learning study group! The primary purpose of the study is to introduce the concept of deep learning to ML beginners. The main content of the Coursera course Introduction to Deep Learning by the University of Colorado Boulder will be covered in the 2022-2023 school year in 12-14 study sessions. By participating in all study sessions, students can earn a UofT-sponsored Coursera certificate and learn deep neural network basics which will well prepare them for later machine learning courses such as APS360, ECE421, etc. This year, all meetings of the study group will be held in person, in which we will present course contents while providing answers to attendees’ questions regarding relevant materials. The main topics include Intro to ML, basics training techniques, MLP, CNN, RNN, LSTM, GRU, Autoencoders, and GAN. If you any have questions feel free to email lindy or Mindy so that the question can be addressed in the coming study session. Students with all levels of experience are welcome! Join us and register here.

Welcome to UTMIST’s paper reading group. The paper reading group is a guided discussion group on machine learning papers. Each session we will break down a complicated machine learning paper into understandable pieces that do not require prior knowledge, so undergraduates are welcome! Our sessions are in-person once a month and are streamed online via zoom. Join us and register here.
Papers are chosen at the start of each month, and sessoins will be held on the last Saturday of each month.
